Professor Zongwei Cai graduated from Xiamen University, China, in 1982 with a BSc degree, and from the University of Marburg, Germany, in 1990 with a PhD degree in Analytical Chemistry. He worked at the University of Nebraska, USA, as a post-doc from 1991-93 and as a Research Assistant Professor from 1994-96. Currently he is Chair Professor of Chemistry and Kwok Yat-Wai Endowed Chair of Environmental & Biological Analysis, Director of Dioxin Analysis Laboratory, and Director of State Key Laboratory of Environmental and Biological Analysis at Hong Kong Baptist University. His research interests include environmental chemistry and toxicology through using mass spectrometry-based omics and imaging techniques.

Kevin Jones is a Distinguished Professor at Lancaster Environment Centre (LEC), Lancaster University, UK. He was awarded his PhD from London University in 1984. He has been based at Lancaster for over 30 years, where his specialist research area concerns the sources, fates, behaviours and effects of organic contaminants in the environment. This includes extensive international collaborations and links with businesses and industries. He was appointed Director of LEC, helping to establish it as one of the largest multi-disciplinary environment centres in Europe. He received the American Chemical Society award for Creative Advances in Environmental Science and Technology (2020) and international cooperation with Guangdong Province, China in 2021. As part of his role with Environmental Science: Advances, Kevin serves as an Associate Editor handling manuscripts submitted for publication.

Celia Manaia has a background in Biochemistry and a PhD in Microbiology. She is Associate Professor of Microbiology and Genetics at the Escola Superior de Biotecnologia of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. As a researcher, she is the head of the Bacterial Ecology Group at Centro de Biotecnologia e Química Fina. This group is focused on the study of bacterial diversity and ecology in human-environment interfaces and on the assessment and mitigation of potential adverse impacts on human health and well-being. Highlights of her research include the assessment of potential impacts of wastewater treatment plant emissions, the evaluation of potential risks associated with water reuse, the tracing of antibiotic resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes as environmental contaminants, the assessment of novel advanced water treatment processes and the harmonization and comparability of methods for inter-laboratory antibiotic resistance monitoring in water environments. Currently, she is Vice-President of the Porto Regional Center of Universidade Católica Portuguesa and Vice-President of the Portuguese Society of Microbiology.
Pernilla Bohlin-Nizzetto, Associate Editor

Pernilla Bohlin-Nizzetto is a Senior Scientist at NILU – Norwegian Institute for Air Research, Kjeller, Norway. She has a PhD in Occupational and Environmental Medicine from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2010) and a post-doc in environmental chemistry from Masaryk University, Brno, Czech Republic. Her scientific interests are the discovery of an understanding of sources, fate, and distribution of new and regulated organic contaminants in outdoor and indoor environments on a local and global scale. She is the project leader of the Norwegian Monitoring Programme of long-range transported atmospheric contaminants (POPs and heavy metals), conducted on behalf of the Norwegian Environment Agency; coordinates monitoring of environmental organic contaminants at the Norwegian research station Trollhaugen in Antarctica, and is responsible for POPs in air and precipitation at EMEP/CCC. She also coordinates Working Group 6 (Emerging substances in the indoor environment) of the NORMAN Network.

Ru-Jin Huang is a professor at the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences. He received a BS degree in chemistry (2002) and an MS degree in analytical chemistry (2005) from Xiamen University and a PhD in atmospheric chemistry from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (2009). He worked at the Goethe University of Frankfurt, the National University of Ireland Galway, and the Paul Scherrer Institute before moving back to China. His research has been recognized through multiple awards including the Asian Young Aerosol Scientist Award (2017), Schmauss Award (2018), Young Scientist Award of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (2018), National Distinguished Young Scholars from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (2019), and the Special Award of China Youth Science and Technology Award (2020). His research interests include atmospheric aerosol chemistry and its link to climate change and human health in both urban and marine environments. His current research focuses on the sources, formation mechanisms, and climate impacts of atmospheric aerosols by combing field observations and laboratory studies based on high-resolution mass spectrometric, optical, and hygroscopic analysis. He has authored/co-authored over 200 peer-reviewed publications.

Ngai Yin Yip is the Lavon Duddleson Krumb Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Engineering at Columbia University. He received his doctoral degree in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from Yale University. His current research is focused on advancing physicochemical technologies and innovations for critical separation challenges in water, energy, and the environment, including high-salinity desalination, zero-liquid discharge, resource recovery from wastewaters, next-generation selective membranes, switchable solvents for water treatment, and low-grade heat utilization. Dr. Yip’s research contributions have earned him numerous recognitions, including the James J. Morgan Early Career Award (Honorable Mention) from Environmental Science & Technology. He has also been featured as an Emerging Investigator in Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology and as a Young Talent in Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering.

David Weissbrodt is a Professor of Microbial Ecology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, and was previously Assistant Professor at Delft University of Technology, Netherlands, from 2016–2022. His research interests focus on microbial systems and process engineering for water, energy, health and the environment, with an interdisciplinary approach including chemical engineering for life technologies, environmental science & engineering, and biotechnology & systems microbiology. He was awarded the inaugural Early-Career Researcher Award from the Specialist Group on Microbial Ecology & Water Engineering (MEWE) of the International Water Association (IWA) in 2019. Aside from his current role with Environmental Science: Advances, David has served several societies professionally as a symposium chair, including the 2017 Symposium on Microbiological Methods for Waste & Water Resource Recovery (MMWWRR), the 2018 IWA Biofilms: Granular Sludge Conference, and the 2021 IWA Specialist Conference on Microbial Ecology & Water Engineering (MEWE). David obtained his PhD in Environmental Biotechnology & Molecular Biology from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland.

Liwu Zhang has been a professor at the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering at Fudan University since November 2014. Prior to his faculty appointment, he did his postdoctoral work at the University of Cambridge. Before that, he was an Alexander von Humboldt Research Fellow at Hannover University. He received his PhD in Chemistry from Tsinghua University in 2009 and is a recipient of the Marie Curie Intra-European Research Fellow award. His research interests include environmental chemistry, atmospheric aerosol chemistry, environmental nanotechnology, photochemistry, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy for pollutant analysis.

Professor Silvia Lacorte (H-index 61) completed her PhD in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Barcelona (1997), undertook a post-doc in Carso Centre d’Analyse (Lyon, France) and in 1999 became full researcher at the Department of Environmental Chemistry in IDAEA-CSIC. Nowadays, she is vice-director of the IDAEA-CSIC and leads an interdisciplinary research group in the field of analytical and environmental sciences. Dr Lacorte is a fellow of the Catalan Society of Chemistry (SCQ) of the Institute of Catalan Studies and of the Spanish Society of Chromatography and Related Techniques (SECYTA). She is a member of the Division of Environment of the EUCHEMS and the Scientific Council of the Rovaltain Foundation (France). Her main research interest is to evaluate the presence and impact of organic contaminants (including microplastics) in the environment and find solutions to mitigate the overwhelming problem of chemical pollution. Special emphasis is placed on the protection of wildlife and natural resources. She has published 220 articles in SCI journals and several book chapters and has presented her work at numerous conferences and congresses. She has participated in or coordinated national and international projects related to water pollution, the impact of pollutants, and remediation actions, and has supervised 15 PhD students. S. Lacorte is a member of the Gender Commission in IDAEA and for the last 10 years she has organized a workshop with the support of the Catalan Chemical Society on “Environment and Society” with only women presenters as a way to promote and visualize their work.
