Following a series of successful meetings organized in Europe since 1981, the XXII EuroFoodChem Conference was held in June 12-14 in Belgrade Serbia, jointly organized by the Food Chemistry Division of EuChemS and the Serbian Chemical Society, supported by the Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts. The Congress program offered both exciting recent trends in food chemistry research and networking opportunities. We are pleased to introduce this collection in Food & Function devoted to EuroFoodChem XXII.

Food & Function provides a unique venue for physicists, chemists, biochemists, nutritionists and other food scientists to publish work at the interface of the chemistry, physics and biology of food. The journal focuses on food, its (micro)constituents and their relation to health and/or nutrition by describing (the):

Physical properties and structure of food

• Chemistry of food components
• Biochemical and physiological actions of food components
• Nutritional aspects of food
• Toxicological responses to food components
• Clinical and population studies using food or food components

This themed collection will focus on the recent advances in the medicinal chemistry of membrane proteins, including GPCRs, ion channels, transporters and more. Topics in this collection will cover but are not limited to:

• Innovations in methods to screen, design and develop small molecule drugs targeting membrane proteins
• Novel methods to design/screen for peptide/small protein/nanobody/antibody drugs towards membrane proteins
• Computational methods to calculate and screen for novel drugs targeting membrane proteins
• Structural information (and molecular mechanisms) that may guide the development of drugs with better pharmaceutical properties

RSC Medicinal Chemistry is a Transformative Journal and Plan S compliant

The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has progressed very fast during the last decade. The progress has impacted many fields including drug discovery and development. In this special collection we would like to highlight the progress of applying AI in the field of medicinal chemistry. We would especially like to capture the application of AI for designing novel compounds of medical relevance as well as using AI for designing the synthetic routes for medicinal chemistry relevant compounds. Also, areas of how the design of compounds can be combined through AI with automation, information rich assays like image & transcriptomics assays and large language models like GTP4 are of high interest. We are also welcoming novel ways of analysing relevant experimental data with AI that can be impactful on drug design. While we always encourage reproducibility through using public data and open-source software, the emphasis here are more on the application of AI methods to progress the field of medicinal chemistry so proprietary data sets and software can be used as long as the application to medicinal chemistry is highly relevant.
